Privacy

Short on purpose. Last updated 3 October 2026.

This is a personal portfolio. It has no accounts, no forms and no adverts, and the site’s own code uses no third-party analytics or tracking services. There is one exception, and it comes from the web host rather than from me: it is described under “Hosting” below.

What the site itself records

  • Anonymous tallies. When a page loads, a section is scrolled into view, an outbound link is clicked, or the light/dark button is used, the site records a short label (for example “home” or “linkedin”), a timestamp, and your country and broad region (for example “GB / England”). That is the whole record.
  • Where the location comes from. Your country and region are worked out on the server by looking your IP address up in a downloaded location database (IP Geolocation by DB-IP, licensed CC BY 4.0). The lookup happens in memory: your IP address is not saved, logged or sent to anyone. Only the country and the broad region are kept: never a town, coordinates or the address itself. It is approximate and sometimes wrong.
  • Not recorded by the site: your IP address, browser or device details, any identifier of its own, or anything you type. The site’s own code sets no cookies. Tallies cannot be tied back to you.
  • Rate limiting. To stop abuse, your IP address is turned into a salted one-way hash that expires within the hour. It is never saved against anything you did.
  • Opt-out. The site sends nothing if your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control.
  • Retention. Tallies are deleted automatically after a fixed period.

On your device

If you use the light/dark button, your choice is saved in your browser’s local storage so the site remembers it. It stays on your device and is never sent anywhere.

Hosting (GoDaddy)

  • The site is hosted by GoDaddy, which processes server logs (such as IP addresses and the pages requested) to run and secure the service.
  • GoDaddy also adds a traffic-measurement script to every page. It loads from img1.wsimg.com, sets the cookies listed below in your browser, and sends visit information to GoDaddy’s servers (csp.secureserver.net). It is GoDaddy’s script, not part of this site’s code, and I cannot see or use what it collects.
  • A content blocker or your browser’s cookie settings will stop it, and the site works the same without it.
  • How GoDaddy handles data is set out in GoDaddy’s privacy notice.

Site management and links

  • The site’s admin tooling (Jetpack) is connected to WordPress.com for security and management of the site itself. Visitor statistics are switched off.
  • Links to LinkedIn and to my projects take you to other sites with their own policies.

Your rights

The site’s own tallies are not tied to you, so there is usually nothing to hand back, but you are welcome to ask. Contact me through the LinkedIn link on the homepage. In the UK you can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
